Motion map of a cart going out and back, lettered to match its motion graph

An example figure from the Motion Map Generator.

A motion map of a cart drawn on two lines: on the lower one it speeds up, moves steadily and slows to a stop at D, lettered A to D at the segment ends; on the line above it speeds up back toward the start and slows to a stop at F, with acceleration arrows above each segment
A cart speeds up forward from A to B, moves at 4 m/s from B to C and slows to a stop at D; then it speeds up backward from D to E and slows to a stop again at F. The way back is drawn above the way there, so no dots overlap. The letters at the segment ends are the same as on the matching Motion Graph example, and an acceleration arrow, or a = 0, sits above each segment.

Answer key

  • A to B (0–2 s): speeding up from 0 to 4 m/s, a = 2 m/s²; 0 m to 4 m
  • B to C (2–5 s): constant velocity 4 m/s; 4 m to 16 m
  • C to D (5–7 s): slowing down from 4 to 0 m/s, a = −2 m/s²; 16 m to 20 m
  • D to E (7–9 s): speeding up from 0 to −4 m/s, a = −2 m/s²; 20 m to 16 m
  • E to F (9–11 s): slowing down from −4 to 0 m/s, a = 2 m/s²; 16 m to 12 m
  • Total displacement: 12 m
  • Distance traveled: 28 m
