Dots-only motion map: draw the velocity arrows

An example figure from the Motion Map Generator.

A motion map with dots only, no arrows, lettered A to I along a number line from 0 to 22 m: evenly spaced at first, then spreading out, then closing up to a stop
A motion map with no arrows, for students to draw the velocity arrow at each dot. The object moves at 2 m/s for 3 s, speeds up to 5 m/s over 3 s, then slows to a stop over 2 s, a dot every second, lettered A to I. The answer key lists what it does in each segment.

Answer key

  • A to B (0–3 s): constant velocity 2 m/s; 0 m to 6 m
  • B to C (3–6 s): speeding up from 2 to 5 m/s, a = 1 m/s²; 6 m to 16.5 m
  • C to D (6–8 s): slowing down from 5 to 0 m/s, a = −2.5 m/s²; 16.5 m to 21.5 m
  • Total displacement: 21.5 m
  • Distance traveled: 21.5 m
