Motion map of a cart that speeds up, moves at a constant velocity, slows down and stops

An example figure from the Motion Map Generator.

A motion map with a dot every second from t = 0 s to 11 s along a number line from 0 to 35 m, the dots spreading out, then evenly spaced, then closing up, and one last dot labeled 12–15 s, each moving dot with a dashed velocity arrow
A cart speeds up from rest for 4 s, moves at a constant 4 m/s for 4 s, slows down to a stop over 4 s and stays at rest for 3 s, drawn as a dot every second along a number line in meters. The dots spread out, are evenly spaced, then close up, and the stop is one dot labeled 12–15 s. Each moving dot has a dashed velocity arrow above it, on one scale, so the arrows grow and shrink with the speed.

Answer key

  • A to B (0–4 s): speeding up from 0 to 4 m/s, a = 1 m/s²; 0 m to 8 m
  • B to C (4–8 s): constant velocity 4 m/s; 8 m to 24 m
  • C to D (8–12 s): slowing down from 4 to 0 m/s, a = −1 m/s²; 24 m to 32 m
  • D to E (12–15 s): at rest; stays at 32 m
  • Total displacement: 32 m
  • Distance traveled: 32 m
