Motion map of an object slowing down to a stop

An example figure from the Motion Map Generator.

A motion map of dots closing up from left to right, labeled t = 0 s to 4 s, then one dot labeled 5–7 s, with dashed velocity arrows getting shorter, and the total displacement Δx drawn under the number line
An object moving at 6 m/s for 1 s, then slowing down steadily to a stop over 4 s and staying at rest for 2 s, as a dot every second. The gaps shrink by 1.5 m each second and the velocity arrows get shorter, until the dots meet at one spot, labeled 5–7 s, with no arrow. An arrow under the number line shows the total displacement, Δx.

Answer key

  • A to B (0–1 s): constant velocity 6 m/s; 0 m to 6 m
  • B to C (1–5 s): slowing down from 6 to 0 m/s, a = −1.5 m/s²; 6 m to 18 m
  • C to D (5–7 s): at rest; stays at 18 m
  • Total displacement: 18 m
  • Distance traveled: 18 m
