Velocity–time graph of a cart speeding up and slowing down

An example figure from the Motion Graph Generator.

A velocity–time graph of straight lines lettered A to F: flat at zero from A to B, rising gently from B to C, rising more steeply from C to D, level from D to E, and falling back to zero from E to F
A velocity–time graph made of straight lines, lettered A to F. The cart is at rest from A to B, speeds up to 2 m/s from B to C, speeds up more quickly to 6 m/s from C to D, holds 6 m/s from D to E, and slows to a stop from E to F. The steeper the line, the greater the acceleration.

Answer key

  • A to B (0–2 s): at rest; stays at 0 m
  • B to C (2–5 s): speeding up from 0 to 2 m/s, a = 0.67 m/s²; 0 m to 3 m
  • C to D (5–8 s): speeding up from 2 to 6 m/s, a = 1.33 m/s²; 3 m to 15 m
  • D to E (8–11 s): constant velocity 6 m/s; 15 m to 33 m
  • E to F (11–14 s): slowing down from 6 to 0 m/s, a = −2 m/s²; 33 m to 42 m
