Matching position–time, velocity–time and acceleration–time graphs

An example figure from the Motion Graph Generator.

Position–time, velocity–time and acceleration–time graphs stacked on one time axis for a cart that goes forward, stops, then goes back, each segment in its own line style, with the segment ends lettered A to F
Three graphs of one motion stacked on the same time axis: position, velocity and acceleration. The cart speeds up forward from A to B, moves at 4 m/s from B to C, slows to a stop at D, speeds up backward from D to E and slows to a stop again at F. Each segment has its own line style, and the segment ends are lettered A to F on every graph.

Answer key

  • A to B (0–2 s): speeding up from 0 to 4 m/s, a = 2 m/s²; 0 m to 4 m
  • B to C (2–5 s): constant velocity 4 m/s; 4 m to 16 m
  • C to D (5–7 s): slowing down from 4 to 0 m/s, a = −2 m/s²; 16 m to 20 m
  • D to E (7–9 s): speeding up from 0 to −4 m/s, a = −2 m/s²; 20 m to 16 m
  • E to F (9–11 s): slowing down from −4 to 0 m/s, a = 2 m/s²; 16 m to 12 m
