Position–time graph: speeding up, constant velocity, slowing down, lettered

An example figure from the Motion Graph Generator.

A position–time graph with its segment ends lettered A to E: curving upward from A to B, a straight line from B to C, curving over and leveling off from C to D, and flat from D to E
A position–time graph of a cart that speeds up from rest for 4 s, moves at a constant 4 m/s for 4 s, slows down to a stop over 4 s and stays at rest for 3 s. Its segment ends are lettered A to E: the line curves upward from A to B, is straight from B to C, curves over from C to D, and is flat from D to E.

Answer key

  • A to B (0–4 s): speeding up from 0 to 4 m/s, a = 1 m/s²; 0 m to 8 m
  • B to C (4–8 s): constant velocity 4 m/s; 8 m to 24 m
  • C to D (8–12 s): slowing down from 4 to 0 m/s, a = −1 m/s²; 24 m to 32 m
  • D to E (12–15 s): at rest; stays at 32 m
