Micrometer reading just past half a millimeter: 5.51 mm

An example figure from the Length Reading Generator.

A micrometer holding a wire, reading 5.51 mm, with a magnified view showing the 5.5 mm mark just uncovered on the sleeve
A micrometer measuring a wire, with the thimble’s edge just past the 5.5 mm mark below the sleeve’s datum line, and the thimble’s 1st mark on the datum line. The reading is 5.5 + 0.01 = 5.51 mm. Missing the half-millimeter mark would give 5.01 mm, the common mistake.
