Micrometer reading 7.38 mm

An example figure from the Length Reading Generator.

A micrometer holding a ball bearing, reading 7.38 mm, with a magnified view of its sleeve and thimble
A 0–25 mm micrometer with a ball between its anvil and spindle. The magnifier shows the 7 mm mark showing on the sleeve, but not the 7.5 mm mark below the datum line, and the thimble’s 38th mark on the datum line, so the reading is 7 + 0.38 = 7.38 mm. The thimble’s marks bunch together toward its top and bottom edges, as on a real one.
